Originally from Minnesota, Carl had his first taste of New Orleans doing relief work after Hurricane Katrina. He moved to New Orleans in 2008 after graduating from college to work as a High School Science Teacher in the public school system.
After two years of teaching, he started medical school in New Orleans, later moving to New York for his residency in Emergency Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital. He speaks five languages fluently, and his interest in global health led to him working abroad in several different countries in South America, the Caribbean, and Africa, but New Orleans has always felt like home.
In his free time, Carl enjoys exploring New Orleans culture, history, and live music, and he is an enthusiastic costumer for Halloween and Mardi Gras events. He loves taking friends and family on personalized tours to share his knowledge and love of the city.
I’m a Midwest girl who’s always chasing the next adventure—Elton John in Prague? Yep. KISS Farewell Concert in NYC? Of course. The Olympics in London? Wouldn’t miss it. But out of everywhere I’ve been, New Orleans is the place that just feels right. You gotta go where you feel most alive—and for me, that’s here.
At Sweet Olive, I want you to feel like you’ve landed somewhere special. Whether we’re chatting over breakfast or trading travel tales, I just like making people feel at home. We all have a story—and I hope Sweet Olive becomes one of your favorite chapters.
Laura and Steve are the mother and stepfather of owner Carl, and beloved members of the Sweet Olive family. Laura is a renowned mixed-media artist whose creative eye helped curate the remarkable artwork and furnishings throughout the inn. A childhood portrait of her hangs in a place of honor in our hallway, and she is also the namesake of the Laura Suite, the crown jewel of the property.
Laura is an essential part of our innkeeping team, graciously stepping in to care for guests and keep Sweet Olive’s warmth and hospitality flowing whenever needed. Steve, meanwhile, is affectionately known as the Mayor of Marigny—a title earned honestly, as he has never met a stranger and is always ready with a story, a joke, or a friendly conversation.
He is also Sweet Olive’s trusted go-to for just about everything. From the pool to the plumbing, from electrical quirks to everyday fixes, Steve has a gift for figuring things out and MacGyvering a solution with whatever is close at hand—often a can of WD-40, a little duct tape, a drill, and plenty of ingenuity. Together, Laura and Steve bring artistry, humor, heart, and a true sense of home to Auld Sweet Olive.
